A resource for adopting a child in the
Licking County, Ohio Probate Court
Adoption Process
It is advisable to be represented by an attorney to proceed with an adoption. Whether the adoption is an agency adoption, private adoption or a step-parent adoption, certain documents must be prepared. Your attorney will need to complete most of these documents, but there are some forms that you will need to complete on your own (see sidebar).
Your background check will need to be an Ohio background check if you have been a resident of Ohio for at least five years. If you have not lived in the state of Ohio for five years, you must have a federal background check completed.
A petition for adoption will be created by your attorney and signed by you as adoptive parent(s). Your attorney will determine who will need to consent to the adoption. A biological parent is almost always entitled to notice of the adoption hearing, even if his/her consent is not required.
Once appropriate notice has been given and the child has been in the home of the adoptive parent(s) for a minimum of six months, a hearing will be held in the Licking County Probate Court regarding the finalization of the adoption.
Some documents you will need to provide:
Four references
A physical examination of the adoptive parent(s) and the child(ren) to be adopted,
A background check
A copy of your marriage license (if applicable).
